Practice Style

Dr. Dougherty operates on the philosophy that each patient is in the driver's seat. It is her job to help guide her patients through life's ups and downs - be that in their health, circumstances or emotions. She focuses primarily on nutrition and exercise to both prevent and treat disease but utilizes medication as necessary to combat illness as appropriate.

"First and foremost I want my patients to know that they are the ones in control of their health. My job is to empower and guide them through the decisions and challenges they may encounter and be their cheerleader the entire way."

What is Lifestyle Medicine

Clinical research overwhelmingly provides evidence for the preferential use of lifestyle interventions as first-line therapy for MANY medical conditions. This research moves lifestyle from an intervention used to prevent disease to an intervention used to TREAT AND EVEN REVERSE disease.

Intensive, physician-mediated education and coaching on nutrition, physical activity and stress management is the mainstay of lifestyle intervention. My aim is to empower my patients to make the changes necessary to heal themselves.

Disease that can often be successfully treated include obesity, diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, high cholesterol, and peripheral vascular disease. Others have shown improvement in disorders such as fibromyalgia, anxiety and depression, insomnia, and autoimmune diseases.

My Blog

Summer Lovin'

OMG. As my first summer WFPB, I am absolutely loving this season. With all of the fresh fruits and vegetables available I have been in heaven!

Last winter I signed up for my first CSA. If you have never heard of or used a CSA - here's the scoop. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. In a CSA a farm sells "shares" to customers who then are guaranteed fresh produce throughout the growing season (23 weeks!).
